If pumpkins are still available for picking after Halloween, you and the kids can pick their favorites and decorate them or take them home so you can make pumpkin pie. The patch is open Tuesday to Friday, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Holiday Launch With Pumpkin Cannons

The summer offers a long list of activities, many of which are water-related. You can try first-rate fly fishing or enjoy water recreation activities in the Deschutes River, like kayaking, canoeing, and floating along the river on floatation devices with friends or a tour guide. For added excitement, you can try whitewater rafting. If you prefer water activities closer to home, you and the entire family can swim and relax at the Sunriver Homeowners Aquatic & Recreation Center.
In addition to water sports, Sunriver is well-known for spectacular golf courses. It also sits near Mt. Bachelor, which offers summer activities like downhill biking, zip lining, scenic chairlift rides, hiking, disc golf, and forest talks.
There are plenty of other sites to see, including the ancient volcanic scenery at Lava Butte, views of the stars at the Oregon Observatory, local exhibits, and a nature walk at the High Desert Museum. Summer is also the perfect time to take a long drive on the Cascade Lakes Scenic Highway. It’s a scenic drive that you won’t forget.
Sunriver is also a popular destination for winter activities. Mt. Bachelor offers skiing, snowboarding, tubing/sledding, and even dog sled rides. Yes, the Chamber of Commerce is located at 56825 Venture Ln #110, Bend, OR 97707, across the street from Camp Abbot Trading Post. It is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, and is closed on Saturday and Sunday. Its website is https://sunriverchamber.com/. Family Day Trips out of Sunriver, Oregon
It’s finally happening.
Phase two of the Oregon reopening plan has greenlit Sunriver for visitors, and most of you adventure-starved weekend warriors are already flocking to our busy little town. The Casago Vacations team is so excited to welcome you all with open arms (from a distance!) and pass you the keys to your vacation rental.
Are things a little different? Sure. Are we taking precautions seriously? Absolutely. However, our balloon of perpetual optimism will not be so easily deflated, and we’re already kicking down the doors to enjoy our favorite outdoor activities under Sunriver’s quintessential summer sun.

Here are two worthy adventures to bring your family together:
Blue Pool Hike on the McKenzie River
Otherwise known as Tamolitch Falls, Blue Pool is a hiking trail about 90 minutes from Sunriver and is known for its strikingly blue pools against a backdrop of waterfalls in a tropical rainforest setting. Not to mention, only a 90 minute one-way drive from Sunriver! This one is a bucket-list necessity, and don’t just take our word for it.
Plan on spending about three hours on this 4-mile round-trip hike. It’s rated as moderately difficult for most able-bodied adults or children.
Tried-and-true tips:
Try less crowded days. Blue Pool is by no means Oregon’s best-kept secrets. Reduce your encounters by venturing out on a weekday or any early morning.
Wear waterproof shoes. Rainforest sometimes means rain, which means mud. Pack an extra pair of shoes!
Stop by Sisters for some shopping. If you have the time, Sisters is an adorable town tucked away in the mountains, though it’s not quiet by any means. Its Main Street is lined with eclectic shops and small boutiques that will keep your family busy for hours.
Check out the Obsidian Grill. Just a few extra minutes past the Blue Pool Trailhead is the Obsidian Grill & McKenzie General Store. This unique one-stop shop is, in their words, a “community watering hole, adventure rest stop and organic hub.” They’ll make your family fall in love with the beer on tap, fresh organic American eats, and live music Thursdays and Saturdays. Don’t come home until you’ve had lunch or dinner on their deck (hopefully in the sunshine).
Crater Lake National Park
Just like it sounds, Crater Lake is a crater lake about 1 hour and 45 minutes from Sunriver, with picturesque scenery that can attract quite a crowd of admirers. Once you see it for yourself, you won’t be wondering why. After you arrive at Crater Lake, there are quite a few activities you can participate in. It’s said that you would need three days to see it all, but we’ve highlighted a few things you can do in just one. If you can do them all, we’d be impressed! But for your sanity’s sake, you may just want to pick a few.
A caveat: As of when we’re writing this blog, not everything will be open. For the most up-to-date information, check out the nps.gov site. The visitor’s center is currently closed, but the bathrooms are open.
Drive the rim. Make your way around the entire lake, stopping at every viewpoint. This alone could take an entire half day, so pack a lunch and some refreshments. Pro tip: Bring a phone charger — you’re going to be taking plenty of pics!
Go for a hike. Discovery Point Trail is a 4-mile out-and-back trail that is accessible year-round and is good for all ability levels. The views from this hike have been said to leave an impression for a lifetime. Insider tip: if you’re bringing children, be wary of sudden drop-offs or other hazardous terrain.
Check out some falls. Plaikni Falls is technically a hike, but visitors describe it as more or less a leisurely nature walk, and they can even be seen from the road. Combine this pitstop with one of the other two suggestions for a perfectly timed day trip to Crater Lake!

Made of stone and logs cut near the property, the Great Hall at the Sunriver Resort is more than just an impressive building— it’s a part of history. This building used to be the officer’s mess hall at Camp Abbot and is the only original structure still standing.
During World War II, Camp Abbot was a military training center located in Central Oregon, along the Deschutes River. The camp was established in 1942 to be a training center for combat engineers in the US Army. Named for the career officer Henry Larcom Abbot, the 5,500 acre camp was used for a little over a year and then closed shortly after D-Day in 1944.
After the war was over, the land was divided up. Almost 2000 acres of the property were sold to the US Forest Service and is now a part of the Deschutes National Forest. But the remaining 3,800 acres became private land and was put up for sale. This was the humble beginning of Sunriver, Oregon.
Building the Sunriver Resort
The history of Sunriver goes back farther than Camp Abbott, but we owe what Sunriver is today to two men who seized an opportunity and had a vision for the land. John Gray, founder of Omark Industries, and Donald V. McCallum, a local attorney, purchased the acreage in 1965.
The two men had a vision to build a luxury resort and a residential community while maintaining the history and dignity of the land. To truly implement their vision, it was important to preserve the natural environment that made the area so beautiful.
In what they called Sunriver, the first home was sold in June of 1968 and the Sunriver Resort opened the following year. 25 years after Gray and McCallum broke ground on the property, the Sunriver Resort was sold to the current owners, Sunriver Resort Limited Partnership. An improvement plan was carried out to modernize the resort, but the beauty of the natural surroundings still remained.
What is Sunriver like today?
Today, Sunriver is much like it was when John Gray and Donald V. McCallum first implemented their vision, just with a few more amenities. With nearly 3,400 acres of land, Sunriver is a resort and residential community with over 1800 full-time residents. Aside from the full-time residents, there are many others who spend several months out of the year soaking up the Oregon sun.
Home to a variety of recreation facilities including golf courses, tennis courts, bike paths, and an ice rink— in Sunriver, there’s something for everyone. The Sunriver Homeowners Aquatic and Recreation Center, or SHARC for short, offers both indoor and outdoor aquatic activities as well as disc golf, basketball, and winter tubing.
The Sunriver Resort offers luxury rooms and vacation rentals to guests visiting Sunriver throughout the year. Much like the rest of Sunriver, the resort is still connected to its history and this is evident through the design of the Great Hall.
As the only original structure left from Camp Abbot, this historic building now serves as a meeting room for conferences or as a location for weddings and banquets. In 1993, renovations were made to update the facility. But with the high ceilings, stone fireplace, and large balcony overlooking the entrance and main floor of the hall, the integrity of the structure remains.
There was one other structure from Camp Abbot that remained on the property for an extended period- the General Patch Bridge. The bridge was built in 1943 and was located on the land that became part of the National Forest. Unfortunately, the structure was demolished back in 2008 due to its instability.

Even today, Sunriver remains a permanent residence and beloved vacation spot for many tourists each year. And who would not want to visit this beautiful community? In the winter, you can witness the snow-covered Sunriver Resort while you prepare your skis and snowboards. In the summer, the weather is warm but not hot with no average temperatures above 71 degrees.

Freebies
Hikes abound around Sunriver, including easy ones for younger kids or non-hardcore hikers. Benham Falls is a scenic and easy destination (though it’s not exactly a soaring cascade). The trail largely follows the river, so it’s pretty flat and laid-back. There’s a cute footbridge and dogs can come along if kept on-leash. The hike is an out-and-back, at 6.4 miles total with only 190 feet of elevation change. Further north along the river are lots more easy trails—just search “hiking” and watch the various trailheads pop up on Google Maps.
South of town, Anne’s Butte offers steeper trails and mountain biking options. It’s recently been closed to motor vehicles, but allows dogs. You can catch some great vistas of Mt. Bachelor from the west side, and you can try to interest the kids in the historic, WWII-era telegraph poles to be found here and there.
Without leaving town, the kids can enjoy a laid-back afternoon free of charge at Fort Rock Park. Extensive playground equipment, basketball, tennis and pickleball courts and picnic areas make this a great option. The tennis courts, however, require a Sunriver Homeowners’ Association pass.
Deals
Without driving too far or spending a fortune, you can enrich your family’s Sunriver vacation with all sorts of educational programming. The famed High Desert Museum (40 minutes away near Bend) has live rescued raptors and conservation education programs, an elaborate series of recreated ecosystems indoors that let kids explore the various ecological niches of the region, and a vivid historical section that brings the area’s histories of both Indigenous folks and settlers to life.
Meanwhile, the Oregon Observatory boasts the nation’s largest selection of publically-accessible telescopes, and is open both day and night. You can “stare all you want” at the sun through one of their safety scopes. Sunspots the size of our planet and other amazing features of our home star stand out. At night, there’s more to see and the schedule of guided cosmic tours starts at 9:00. The adjacent Sunriver Nature Center have summer camps where kiddos can spend their days “playing nature-based games, meeting live animals, crafting masterpieces, and exploring the forest and pond.”
Splurges
More activities include Sunriver Stables. Sunriver Stables lets kids seven and up take horseback rides with their folks on their trail network. The package comes with instruction and a guide, and helmets are available. You save significantly on a longer ride: half an hour costs $45, an hour just $65 (a 28% cut to the per-hour). On Saturdays from 10:00 to 2:00, the littles aged two to six can ride too, on the Shetland ponies.
The Sunriver Homeowners Aquatic and Recreation Center (SHARC) is a one-stop shop for fun, with pool, water slides, hot tub, toddler area and lots of non-aquatic options as well. It falls in the “splurge” category only if you don’t rent a place with passes included, as many units at Arrived Sunriver have. There are also lots of upsells at SHARC, from mini golf to bumper cars, but there are also play areas kids can enjoy for no extra fee. For the grownups, SHARC also hosts a summer concert series with performers ranging from local acts to luminaries like Melissa Etheridge.
Finally, for a much more wild and wooly aquatic experience, consider guided white-water rafting with Sun Country Tours. The Big Eddy Thriller is their most popular ride, and suitable for first-timers. Not surprisingly, you’ll have to sign away your guarantee of not dying, but fill out the waiver online and check-in will be a breeze (plus you probably won’t die). In addition to the tour fee, guides take action shots with professional waterproof cameras. The link to your moments of intrepid splashing will cost you an extra $35. Guides are also good at drawing your attention to natural features on the calmer stretches. Beaver dams, osprey nests and more cool critters have been sighted.
After all that activity, you and the kids will have worked up an appetite. There are a couple of grocery stores in the village for thrifty travellers who are cooking at their rentals. There are also a few restaurants, though nearby Bend offers a good deal more variety on this front. Skip the drive and ditch the kids for a round or two at Sunriver Brewing, or a cocktail at the waterfront’s Twisted River Tavern. The Brewery is a better bet for craft beers, though the Tavern has a decent list too. Cocktail-wise, you can get classics like a Mai Tai renamed “Sunriver Sunset” or a Hemingway Daquiri re-christened “Summer Breeze” for some reason. You can get something ditzy with peach schnapps, or something with less alcohol and more hipster cred like the marionberry puree, rosemary simple and prosecco spritz. Then you can weave your way home along Sunriver’s already-wavy roads, cough up for the sitter, and crash before your next big day begins.
One of the biggest questions parents have is how can you take your children along with you on vacation and still make it fit the budget? It can be hard to balance your wallet when you’re trying to create a trip that will be fun for you and your kids. Sunriver offers countless options that has a little something for everyone. Even better, it won’t break the bank.
Kid-Friendly Hikes with a View
Central Oregon has beautiful scenery that you can’t miss when you’re out hiking. The Deschutes River Trail is a notable adventure that you can tailor to your family’s needs. The stretch between Meadow Camp and Lava Island is a particularly pretty part of the trail, and extends about a mile in length, making it an accessible and short two-mile hike for your family.
Smith Rock State Park is north of Bend, so it is a bit of a drive from Sunriver, but this is a great spot to visit that has multiple options depending on your family’s skill level. There are gorgeous river views and more often than not, you’ll encounter some otters hanging out. Watch out for snow and ice if you go in the winter months.
Pilot Butte, located in Bend, Oregon (about 10 miles north of Sunriver) is a dormant volcano turned hiking-attraction. It’s a bit of a steep climb at 500 feet elevation and a mile up, but once at the top you can see views of Broken Top, Three Sisters, Mt. Bachelor, and Mt. Jefferson. If you’re worried about the climb with your younger kids (or for yourself!) you can drive up the paved road during summertime. The base of Pilot Butte has a playground and area to picnic. Bend also has a plethora of kid-friendly breweries as well. After spending some time at Pilot Butte, head on over to one of Bend’s (there’s 22!) breweries and get some great food and drinks for you and the family.
Finally Paulina’s Lake is a great option for beautiful sites. It’s located in a caldera in Newbury Volcano and relies entirely on rain, snowmelt, and hot springs for water. Bring your kids to lake and pond fish and see if they can beat the state record of a 27-pound, 12-ounce brown trout!
Sunriver Homeowners Aquatic & Recreation Center
Many of our vacation homes comes with Sunriver Homeowners Aquatic & Recreation Center (SHARC) passes. SHARC offers numerous aquatic features and other amenities, like a disc golf course. While most popular in the summer, it also has facilities available in the winter, including an indoor pool and hot tub. Sunriver Area Museums
A good way to learn about the history of Central Oregon is to check out some of the museums that are around the area. The High Desert Museum focuses on all aspects of living in the high desert. There are animals like otters, porcupines, bobcats, reptiles, and insects and classes to learn about birds of prey and big predators in the area. Different exhibits occupy the museum and depending on when you go, you’ll learn about Native Americans who lived in the area and other historical moments in history. There’s also a play section for kids if you have young children you’re bringing with you.
Another option is the Sunriver Nature Center, which focuses on wildlife and the ecology of the Sunriver area. Like the High Desert Museum, there are also live animal exhibits.
